Coach Abel Q & A with LoveSetMatch

**The LoveSetMatch Experience**

What first brought you to LoveSetMatch — and what made you stay?

I initially came for the love of the game and the chance to share my technical skills. What made me stay, however, wasn’t the tennis itself—it was the energy. Seeing a kid’s face light up when they finally find their rhythm on the court is more rewarding than any match I’ve played.

Before volunteering, what did you think this program would be… and how has the reality surprised you?

I expected a standard clinic—drills, footwork, and basic coaching. The reality is that it’s much more of a mentorship program. I was surprised by how much life happens on the sidelines and how the sport is really just a vehicle for teaching confidence and resilience.

What’s a moment on the court or with the kids that really stuck with you?

There was a session where one of the quieter kids spent the whole hour struggling with their serve. Instead of getting frustrated, two other kids stopped their own game to cheer them on. Seeing that kind of organic sportsmanship reminded me that we’re building a community, not just athletes.

How would you describe LoveSetMatch to someone who’s never heard of it before?

It’s a youth development program that uses tennis as a hook to build character. We provide a safe, high-energy environment where kids can learn a lifelong sport regardless of their background or skill level.

**Impact & Community**

Why do you think programs like this matter for communities like ours?

Tennis can often feel like an exclusive or expensive sport. Programs like this break down those barriers and make the “sport of a lifetime” accessible to everyone. It gives kids a productive outlet and a sense of belonging right in their own neighborhood.

What does being part of LoveSetMatch say about you as a person?

I think it shows a commitment to the “long game.” Coaching isn’t about instant results; it’s about investing time into the next generation and believing that small, consistent efforts on the court can lead to big changes in a kid’s life.

What’s something you’ve gained from volunteering here that you didn’t expect?

I didn’t expect to learn so much about patience. Coaching kids requires you to adapt your communication style constantly. I’ve gained a lot of perspective on how to meet people where they are, which has helped me in my life off the court too.

If someone was thinking about volunteering but wasn’t sure yet… what would you tell them?

Don’t worry about being a “perfect” player or coach. The kids don’t need a pro; they need someone who is present, encouraging, and willing to pick up a few stray balls. You’ll find that you get just as much out of the experience as they do.

**The Big Picture**

Finish this sentence: “LoveSetMatch is special because…”

LoveSetMatch is special because it turns a solo sport into a family, where the biggest win is the confidence a child carries off the court.

**Personal Background**

Where are you from, and where did you grow up?

I grew up right here in Southern California. Living in an area with such a vibrant outdoor culture and great weather really allowed me to stay active year-round, which eventually led me to the court.

What sports did you play growing up, and how did that shape you?

Tennis was always the main focus, but I stayed active with running and team sports as well. Sport taught me how to handle “the grind”—the idea that you have to put in the work when no one is watching if you want to perform when the stands are full.

Who has been a big influence in your life, and what did you learn from them?

One of my early coaches was a huge influence. He never focused on the scoreboard; he focused on the effort. He taught me that you can’t always control the outcome of a match, but you can always control your attitude and your work ethic.

Outside of volunteering, what are you passionate about or working toward in life?

I’m a student and a big believer in continuous self-improvement. Whether I’m working on my fitness, my studies, or even a DIY project, I’m passionate about the process of learning something new and seeing it through to the end.
