The Science of the Swing
An Interview with Youhyun Lee, STEM Educator & LSM Volunteer
Hello, LoveSetMatch students and volunteers! My name is Youhyun Lee. I am a STEM educator and an educational content creator. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 11 years and currently live in Mid-City.
I first discovered LoveSetMatch as an adult beginner student at Ladera Park. Having worked with several educational nonprofits, the “STEM-based tennis curriculum” caught my eye. As a robotics coach, I knew I had to get involved as a volunteer STEM consultant.
Why STEM + Tennis?
“By blending STEM with movement, kids can see and feel science in their daily lives. What excites me most is witnessing that ‘Aha!’ moment when a student uses their racquet to prove a scientific principle right on the court.”
One of my favorite moments was hosting a “STEM in Tennis” session for volunteers. I used classical and fluid mechanics to explain topspin, backspin, and trajectories. Even the advanced players thanked me because they learned something entirely new about the game they loved.
To make science accessible, I prioritize interaction. Students might not remember every technical detail, but they will remember the joy they felt. The next time they hear those STEM terms in a classroom, they’ll feel excitement and confidence.
I am someone who truly loves the energy of adventurous sports like kickboxing, snowboarding, and water skiing. I want to show students, especially young girls, that you can be a beast on the tennis court and still be a STEM powerhouse. You can be powerful, aggressive, and academically brilliant all at once.
