Q & A with Coach Paul!

What first inspired you to volunteer with LoveSetMatch?
I was lucky enough to come across Coach PK, who introduced me to the organization and encouraged me to become part of it. I wanted to give back what I was given and taught by him — to pass on the same love and knowledge of the game that he shared with me.

What’s the most rewarding part of coaching?
Seeing my students improve and push themselves to become better is always rewarding, but what means the most is watching them truly enjoy their time on the court. When I see them fall in love with the sport the way I did, it reminds me why I coach.

What personal values connect you with a LoveSetMatch?
I’m deeply passionate about tennis. It’s a sport that’s given me so much, and I love being part of a community that shares that same energy and commitment to spreading the game.

What do you enjoy outside of tennis?
I like to play chess to calm myself and go hiking. Recently, I’ve also been trying to learn how to play the piano.

What might surprise people about you?
I never played varsity tennis in high school!

If you could design your dream volunteer role, what would it be?
I’d love to organize a “Fun Committee” where everyone comes together once in a while for a massive group session — all levels, all ages — just to play, connect, and enjoy the game as one big community.

What’s a moment you’re proud of?
One memorable moment for me was seeing my students play doubles in the Almont League and advance far into team CIF. Watching their hard work pay off was incredibly fulfilling.

What’s a challenge you’ve overcome?
As a young coach fresh out of high school, I had to learn how to assert myself and let my tennis do the talking. It taught me confidence, patience, and the importance of earning respect through example.

Who has been a mentor for you?
Coach PK has been my biggest mentor. He showed me that tennis isn’t just about what happens on the court — it’s also about what you take from it off the court. He really opened my eyes to a different perspective of the game.

What do you do off the court?
I like to spend time with my siblings and friends — we’ll grab food or sometimes even play tennis together just for fun.

What’s a goal you’re working toward right now?
I’m focused on finishing school and continuing my studies in data science.

What words come to mind when you think of LoveSetMatch?
Wholesome, well-loved community, and genuine.

What does being part of LoveSetMatch mean to you?
It means being part of an organization that shares the same joy and passion for tennis — and passing that love on to the younger generation.
